scary gin drinks // happy hour

i’ve come to terms that i am an old person that shameless-ly loves a good G&T. But every now and again i like to mix up my drinks and throw something a little sweeter into the mix. this drink turned out super cute, although the only thing that makes it really “spooky” is the fact that i put it in beakers that i got from michaels!

KAW_1122

add one ounce of your fav gin (if you like your drinks a little stronger add one and a half ounces)

KAW_1127

next i added one ounce of st-germain liquor which i have never had before but it tastes kind of floral but in a good way… that doesn’t make sense but give the sample a go!KAW_1150KAW_1156

next added ice!

then i filled the beaker until the 300mL line with this pomegranate and lemon mix i found at bevmo

i topped the drink off with 100mL of tonic water (fever tree is my fav, don’t use anything else!)

and that is the scary gin drink! hopefully you can feel inspired to mix up your cocktails this spooky season!

nespresso // a review

if you know me, you know this girl doesn’t do anything before coffee. i’m totally that person that spends the $4-$5 dollars a day at my local coffee shop and i’m not ashamed (maybe a little, but i’ve come to terms with it).

now that i’m out in the middle of nowhere gilbert, my options are starbucks (no thanks) or driving out of my way to pay for a coffee from somewhere that isn’t my favorite coffee shop. so i decided i would forgo the purchasing of my coffee and simply purchase an at home machine.

i had a keurig in the past and hated it. it was watery and no matter the coffee i got it was just overall bad. from that i contemplated what i did like and why the keurig didn’t do it for me. i realized i needed espresso so i decided this time ’round i needed something that would give me espresso *enter nespresso machine*

KAW_0008

I got my nespresso from best buy but I price matched it with a target machine so you can find that here. before purchasing this machine i did some research on the overall brand and what people thought of the coffee against normal machines or the keurig. most people seemed extremely loyal to their nespresso machine and i decided I would give it a go.

i got the cheapest machine they offer simply because #college #broke but also because essentially they all brew the same cup of coffee. mine happened to come with a milk frother (which a lot seemed to) so that was a nice bonus, but i’m not a foam fan so it probably won’t get much use.

KAW_0004

as for the actual machine i think it’s really neat. it has a water reservoir so you only have to fill it up every 2-3 cups. it also has two size options so you can have a straight espresso shot or one closer to an americano (i think it’s meant to be a double shot, but it just tastes more watery). it also has a compartment where the old pods fall once they are used so you don’t have to dig out the pods after each use. all of these get a big thumbs ups from me!

as for the coffee i think it is great and exactly what i was looking for! a sampler pack came with my machine so i’ve been working my way through that to find what i like the best but i went ahead and ran up to the nespresso store in scottsdale to sample and purchase some extra pods. i got the intenso iced blend and the roma blend.

KAW_0016

i always have my coffee iced so i tend to brew the pod (with a little sugar in the bottom if i’m craving sweet) and pour that over ice. the secret weapon to great at home coffee is creamer and i love the silk soy coffee creamer!

KAW_0017

overall i am really happy with my nespresso machine! (and so is katelyn who benefits from it as well!) i don’t think i can say that i will never go buy coffee again, but it is exactly what i wanted now that i am far away.

whats your favorite coffee?

coffee in halifax // caught in canada

hello my lovely blog readers! i’m so excited to be back in the blogging saddle! i took a super quick trip up to canada for a wedding and i didn’t post anything while i was gone because i was sick, helping the bride and honestly because i was trying to see as much of halifax as i could!

so today i bring you a post i have been planning since i booked this trip and it is about all the coffee places i visited. i made a choice not to visit tim hortons or starbucks because i was pretty sure everyone knew how their coffee tasted, but i gathered a short list of places i wanted to try and here is what i came up with!

1. Second Cup

KAW_0205

my first day in halifax i was pretty out of it and didn’t fancy driving too far so i ended up at second cup coffee company. if you live in canada this is a pretty common coffee chain and you can find it in almost any city. because it was a place i had never tried i still figured it was worth a few words in this post.

i would describe second cup as just… not great. my quad shot latte cost 7$ which is crazy and i honestly couldn’t even taste the coffee. the best part of this place was how close it was to my grandma’s apartment in bayer’s lake. if you’re in a rush to get a coffee i would recommend sticking with your normal starbucks than going to second cup.

2. Lucky Penny Co.

lucky penny is probably the most esthetically pleasing coffee house we got to visit! from the moment you walk in the cozy feeling and beautiful decor invites you to stay a while. the coffee wasn’t anything special, but i think that if i lived in halifax, this coffee place would be my choice to sit in and study. something they did that was different was they steamed my soy milk before putting it over ice, but it tasted good so all was well! because it is on quinpool road parking is more difficult but so worth it!

3. Local Jo Café

KAW_0412KAW_0407KAW_0405KAW_0411

local jo is an adorable café tucked away in what seems to be a residential neighborhood. this place was PACKED when we went, with almost every table filled with people chatting away. the coffee wasn’t my favorite (mainly because i was dumb and didn’t ask how many shots were in a latte and only ended up with one in my drink) but i wish i hadn’t had breakfast because the food looked to be the main attraction of the place!

4. Jumping Bean

KAW_0206 2KAW_0210

jumping bean was a recommendation from my grandmother! (she somehow knew the owner and as i’ve come to realize it’s common in halifax for everyone to know everyone’s mother). this was my day two coffee and after suffering through second cup on my first day jumping bean was a god sent! the coffee was amazing and the bright orange decor on the walls was cheery. if you’re in bedford head over to jumping bean!

5. Java Blend

KAW_02652KAW_02672KAW_02682KAW_02702

java blend is another coffee shop that was very inviting! it was busy on the Sunday morning we popped over and for good reason. the coffee was absolutely perfect. it had a sweeter flavor to the espresso with almost subtle hints to caramel. another big plus to this place was it was easy to find and had great parking!

6. Cortado Tasting Room

KAW_0402KAW_0404KAW_0405KAW_0407KAW_0408KAW_0415

finally we have cortado. this place blew me out of the water and is my #1 must try coffee place. to start the decor was amazing and had a very modern yet home-y feel. the staff was AWESOME(!); i went with both of my grandmothers and the women at the cash was nice and helpful to answer questions they had. also the barista who made our coffees was joking with us about his coffee art (which ps was awesome, even if he said it’s ‘blob art’). but most importantly, the coffee. i got the same thing at each coffee shop (an iced soy latte) and this was leaps and bounds above the rest. that is because i have never tasted a coffee where the espresso itself had so many flavor layers. it is hard to describe, but if you have the opportunity, take a dip into cortado to discover the magic for yourself!

where is your favorite coffee place??

(ps. the header picture is of a print i got from lost and found in halifax!)
